Karachi, Dec 8 (PTI) Pakistans upcoming home Davis Cup tie against Iran has gone under a shadow of doubt as Iran has asked ITF to shift the contest to a neutral venue due to security concerns. Pakistan Tennis Federation (PHF) Secretary Khalid Rehmani said the ITF had informed them that the Iranian Tennis officials had sent them a letter expressing concerns over the security situation in Pakistan. “This letter has come as a big shock to us. Iran is a friendly nation with us and their athletes have been coming to Pakistan for different sports events in the last two years,” he said. Rehmani said that Iran?s request would now be discussed at the Executive Board of directors of the ITF. The PTF was overjoyed last month when the ITF confirmed that Pakistan would be hosting its Davis Cup tie against Iran at home (Islamabad) in February. It was the first Davis Cup tie in Pakistan after 12 years of isolation due to security concerns by teams who refused to play in Pakistan forcing them to play home ties on neutral venues. “We did not expect this from Iran as we were confident they would come. The ITF only gave us permission to host the Davis Cup tie at home after their security experts studied the situation in detail and gave clearance,” Rehmani said. He said that the PTF had given all assurances to the ITF that it would provide the best security for the Davis Cup which is to be held at the secure Pakistan sports complex in Islamabad. “We will get in touch with the Iranian tennis officials and try to convince them again that they should not have any concerns over the security which will be provided to their players and officials,” Rehmani said. The last time Pakistan played a home Davis Cup tie was against New Zealand in New Zealand but top player Aisam ul Haq Qureshi had boycotted the tie in protest. PTI Cor AT ATadvertisement
Cricket Australia has tried to lure captain Steve Smith and vice-captain David Warner away from the Indian Premier League by offering them multi-year contract deals.According to the Sydney Morning Herald, CA got in touch with Smith, Warner and fast bowlers Mitchell Starc, Josh Hazlewood and Pat Cummins with “verbal offers of three-year deals” instead of the usual one-year contract. However, there was a condition: stay away from the IPL.Pat Howard, CA’s executive general manager of team performance, approached the players with the new offers in the midst of a pay dispute but he reportedly got a lukewarm response from the stars.Last month, Australia’s professional cricketers rejected a pay offer from CA, saying the proposal was “a win for cricket administrators but a loss for cricket”.Warner and Smith are among the most valued international cricket stars in the IPL.Warner led Sunrisers Hyderabad to lift the title last year and was on top of his game with 848 runs, losing the Orange Cap to Virat Kohli. This year, Warner has already amassed 535 runs and is a clear favourite to finish the season as leading run-scorer.Smith on the other hand, has turned it around for Rising Pune Supergiant after taking over as captain from MS Dhoni. He has so far scored 367 runs.Starc was an integral part of Royal Challengers Bangalore before he decided to sit out this season in a bid to prepare for the Champions Trophy which starts in England from June 1. Cummins has been impressive for the Delhi Daredevils, who have as a team endured some tough moments this summer.advertisementNotably, all these players command top bucks and would almost certainly make more money in the IPL than any of CA’s multi-year contracts on offer currently. It remains to be seen if the Australian board comes back with more aggressive offers.Australia apparently want to ensure their players remain fit and fresh for international assignments and have sufficient break to recover before the gruelling international season starts after April-May.

Women who do two or more night shifts a week during pregnancy are likely to have an increased risk of miscarriage, says a new study. This is because women working at night are exposed to artificial light which disrupts their circadian rhythm or body clock and decreases the release of melatonin – a hormone that regulates sleep-wake cycles and helps in maintaining a successful pregnancy, according to the study published in the Occupational and Environmental Medicine journal. Also Read – An income drop can harm brainThe findings showed that after the eighth week of pregnancy, women who had worked two or more night shifts had a 32 per cent higher risk of miscarriage. “This may be explained by the decline in the proportion of chromosomally abnormal foetuses with gestational age, which makes an association with environmental exposure more easily detectable among later miscarriages,” said researchers. Previous studies have also stated that women who work in night shifts, even occasionally, are at an increased risk of early menopause, which can heighten the possibility of developing cardiovascular disease, osteoporosis and memory problems.
Rabat – Facebook removed multiple pages, groups, and accounts this week for their involvement in “coordinated inauthentic behaviour” operations on Facebook and Instagram. The social media giant identified two unconnected operations, the first originating from the UAE and Egypt, and the second originating from Saudi Arabia. Both operations were created to mislead social media users about the state of affairs in a number of middle eastern countries, Facebook stated in a press release on August 1. First operationFacebook found that the UAE and Egypt based operation was linked to two marketing firms: New Waves in Egypt and Newave in the UAE. The identified accounts impersonated public figures, posed as local news organizations in targeted countries and promoted content about the UAE, Facebook found. The account owners also posted about local news, politics, elections, and topics including alleged support of terrorist groups by Qatar and Turkey, Iran’s activity in Yemen, the conflict in Libya, successes of the Saudi-led coalition in Yemen, and the independence for Somaliland.Second operationAccording to Facebook, the second operation was linked to “individuals associated with the government of Saudi Arabia.”In this case, the account owners posted promotional information about the Saudi Crown Prince Mohammad bin Salman and successes of the Saudi Armed Forces, particularly during the conflict in Yemen. They also criticized neighboring countries including Iran, Qatar, and Turkey, and called into question the credibility of the Qatar-owned Al-Jazeera news network and Amnesty International. The key targets of the operation were Qatar, the UAE, Bahrain, Egypt, Morocco, Palestine, Lebanon, and Jordan, Facebook says.Read Also: Facebook Implements Live-Streaming Restrictions after Christchurch AttacksFacebook’s press release did not specify how exactly Morocco was targeted by the operations.Rising diplomatic tensionTensions have been rising this year between Morocco, Saudi Arabia and the UAE.In February, Saudi news channel Al Arabiya aired a documentary questioning Morocco’s sovereignty over Western Sahara, after which Rabat recalled Moroccan ambassadors from the United Arab Emirates and Saudi Arabia. That same month, Morocco also withdrew from the coalition fighting in Yemen. In April this year, UAE’s ambassador to Morocco abruptly left the country, causing speculation of diplomatic tensions arising from Morocco’s position in the Gulf Crisis. Morocco refused to side with the UAE and Saudi Arabia in the Gulf Crisis blockade of Qatar. When Saudi Arabia and the UAE severed ties with Qatar on June 6, 2017, closing borders and restricting airspace, Morocco chose to remain neutral. The “coordinated inauthentic behaviour,” displayed by the UAE and Saudi Arabia may be rooted in political tension.

Fabutan supports health minister’s under-18 tanning ban by News Staff Posted Mar 23, 2015 7:28 am MDT New tanning bed legislation is expected to be introduced by provincial health minister Stephen Mandel, as early as this week Last July, Fabutan, one of the major tanning companies operating in Alberta, began banning people under the age of 18 from tanning.Mat Rockey, president of Fabutan, tells City News, they will support the new legislation in the province “as long as the regulations that come from Alberta Health are focused on the right things.” He said they would like to see mandatory training for all salon operators and an under-18 ban on sun bed use. Rockety said he is in favour of the new rules that would be imposed on all businesses. “I do believe that having a government impose legislation will make sure all salon operators do things the right way,” explained Rockety. “Skin-type their customers, avoid sunburn, have trained operators, things like that, those things have to be in place.”A recent study by the Canadian Cancer Society shows any use of indoor tanning facilities before the age of 35 can increase a person’s risk of developing melanoma by almost 60 per cent. “The Darfur Development Strategy acknowledges that while current conditions may not be perfect, ‘the people are ready for change’,” the Secretary-General said in his message to the Conference. The international donor forum hosted by Qatar wrapped up today after two days of pledging which organizers had hoped would raise $7.2 billion to cover reconstruction and development of Darfur over a six-year period. According to reports, at least $3.7 billion was pledged.“We share a collective commitment to achieving a comprehensive and inclusive peace for the people of Darfur. Resolving the conflict there remains critical to consolidating peace and stability for Sudan as a whole,” said Mr. Ban. He noted that the long-stalled effort to find a political solution to the conflict reached a turning point last July with the adoption of the Doha Document for Peace in Darfur by the Government of Sudan and the Liberation and Justice Movement. Last month, the Justice and Equality Movement-Sudan also agreed to sign on to the Doha Document. Mr. Ban also urged the Government to cooperate in facilitating the work of the African Union-United Nations Mission in Darfur (UNAMID), humanitarian actors and international development partners throughout Darfur, while respecting human rights.“The Government of Sudan must clearly demonstrate its commitment to fulfil its financial obligations to support recovery and development in Darfur,” Mr. Ban said. Meanwhile, thousands of civilians are seeking protection, many of them with their livestock, near joint AU-UN peacekeeping teams in Muhajeria and Labado, East Darfur State, after attacks and “possible air strikes” on the towns. “UNAMID reaffirms its commitment to protect displaced civilians,” the Mission said in a press release. The peacekeeping mission is working with UN agencies to ascertain the best means of supporting aid delivery to the population, particularly the civilians concentrated around the team site. “We in UNAMID condemn the use of force seen in the attack on Muhajeria and Labado towns in East Darfur. These actions only bring further suffering to the civilian population and undermine the peace process,” said the new Head of UNAMID and Joint Chief Mediator for the AU and UN, Mohamed Ibn Chambas. He officially takes up his post today.According to the Mission, members of the Sudan Liberation Army led by Minni Minawi attacked and seized the towns on 6 April wounding at least three civilians, including a staff member from UNAMID. “At both locations, UNAMID personnel reported several possible air strikes and are taking steps to ascertain the number of casualties caused by the fighting,” according to information in the statement. Established in July 2007, UNAMID has the protection of civilians as its core mandate, but is also tasked with contributing to security for humanitarian assistance, monitoring and verifying implementation of agreements and assisting with an inclusive political process, among other responsibilities.According to UN figures estimates, some 300,000 people have been killed in Darfur since the conflict between rebels, Government forces and allied militiamen erupted in 2003 and about 2.7 million others have had to flee their homes. Both sides have been accused of numerous human rights abuses.

No Greek parliamentarian has assets in Swiss banks, according to a preliminary probe into the “origin of wealth” declarations submitted by politicians for 2009 and posted on Parliament’s website on Tuesday. The so-called “pothen esches” forms – in which specific professional sectors are required to list all their assets so that the Finance Ministry can cross-check depositors’ details with their earnings – were submitted by the 300 active members of Parliament, 22 Euro-deputies and 189 former MPs. Data from previous years were not provided, despite calls for comparative figures. Also, the source of the wealth listed by the politicians remained unclear. No further explanations were offered regarding the fate of the bank deposits of 11 deputies who emptied their accounts in 2009. The head of committee overseeing the inspection process, Vangelis Argyris, said none of the MPs declared assets in Swiss or any other foreign-based banks but that the forms will be looked at again and penalties imposed for any undeclared funds. According to Argyris, the only declaration which violates the law is that of former minister Akis Tsochatzopoulos, who has been indicted for accepting bribes for the purchase of submarines. The declarations revealed small increases in income. The income of former Premier and socialist PASOK leader George Papandreou rose to 129,000 euros from 126,000 in 2008. Conservative New Democracy leader Antonis Samaras and right-wing Popular Orthodox Rally leader Giorgos Karatzaferis reported the biggest increases. Samaras said his rose to 217,000 euros from 107,000 in 2008, while Karatzaferis said he netted 268,000 euros, up from 110,000 in 2008. Communist Party leader Aleka Papariga said she received 135,000 euros, up from 90,000, while the leader of the Coalition of the Radical Left, Alexis Tsipras, said he made 48,000 euros, up from 21,500. Manchester United manager Jose Mourinho was seen scouting Burnley in their 1–1 draw against Olympiakos on Thursday night, according to Mirror Football. The United boss was in attendance as Burnley failed to overturn a 3-1 deficit which meant they failed to make it to the group stages of this season’s UEFA Europe League. Now, last season’s seventh place side can refocus on domestic affairs, after a difficult start to the season has left them with just one point from their opening three matchesThe Clarets next host Manchester United and Jose Mourinho who have had a difficult start to the season after suffering defeats in their last two games.United were dismantled 3-0 at home by Tottenham Hotspur on Monday and lost 3-2 away at Brighton & Hove Albion a well before that.Mourinho: “Lionel Messi made me a better coach” Andrew Smyth – September 14, 2019 Jose Mourinho believes the experience of going up against Barcelona superstar Lionel Messi at Real Madrid made him a greater coach.Mourinho’s position at United is under increasing scrutiny, particularly amid suggestions that his relationship with executive vice-chairman Ed Woodward is waning. The former Chelsea gaffer who was spotted wearing a hoodie and cap, was joined by members of his backroom staff as they evaluated Dyche’s side. The Special One may well have been trying to stay out of the limelight, but that didn’t stop one young fan seeking him out, with Mourinho smiling as he signed the boy’s programme. The enigmatic Portuguese was sat in the stands first-team coach Silvino Louro and scout Ricardo Formosinho.

Roma sporting director Ramon Monchi has pleaded with the club fans to exercise patience as they work on rediscovering their form. The Spaniard has been under scrutiny for his poor transfer business over the summer, with the exit of Alisson, Kevin Strootman and Radja Nainggolan all slowing down the club’s progress. However, Nainggolan’s sale did bring Zaniolo in exchange, and the youngster has been one of the bright lights so far.“I think the fans will eventually begin to understand what my idea is,” Monchi assured in an interview with Football Italia, which will be broadcast in full on New Year’s Day.Chris Smalling open to a permanent AS Roma deal Andrew Smyth – September 6, 2019 Chris Smalling can “definitely see a longer-term future” for himself at AS Roma should things work out on his loan spell from Manchester United.“I know that there’s no time in football, but I know the way we work and I hope we’ll be right.“As for Zaniolo, when we were negotiating we had two requests: him and [Andrei] Radu. Radu had already gone to Genoa though.“Inter didn’t want to sell Zaniolo, they’re not stupid, but given that they wanted to take Radja it was only logical they’d have to give something up.“The deal wouldn’t have collapsed without Zaniolo, it wasn’t an either/or situation. I have to say, I didn’t think Zaniolo would be so decisive right away.”
Peter Caranicas, managing editor of Variety, will lead the effort editorially. Each edition of Artisans will include a major feature story, recent news and economic reporting. Variety has covered the behind-the-scenes action of Hollywood for more than 100 years, but the show business b2b brand is going deeper with the launch of Artisans. The new vertical aims at the people who make the television and movie industries go, but never show up on screen—the “below-the-line” community of cinematographers, costume designers, stunt workers and agents.Starting with its July 29 issue, Artisans will appear regularly in the weekly print magazine, as well as online with digital-only features, including in-studio video interviews and field reports.”This is an area of the industry that has been widely unreported and Variety intends to own this coverage,” says Claudia Eller, Variety editor-in-chief of film, in a statement. “No movie, TV show or commercial could be made without the hard work of these unsung heroes. And we are committed to telling their stories and shining a spotlight on the tough issues they confront in their jobs.”
The House version of the fiscal 2016 defense authorization bill will be aligned with that chamber’s budget resolution, allowing DOD to tap the tens of billions of dollars in extra funds stashed in its war account for requirements that ordinarily would be funded in the department’s base budget.“I’m not too wrapped up in the label on the account,” Mac Thornberry (R-Texas), chairman of the House Armed Services Committee, said last week before his panel’s subcommittees began marking up the annual policy bill.House and Senate conferees are close to reaching agreement on a compromise budget resolution calling for the allocation of $96 billion to DOD’s overseas contingency operations (OCO) account, a $38 billion boost over the amount in the Pentagon’s budget request. With DOD’s base budget subject to the Budget Control Act spending caps, the House and Senate Budget committees decided shifting base budget needs to the war account was the easiest way to loosen the pressure on defense spending in FY 2016.Funding to bolster operations and maintenance accounts is a strong candidate to be shifted to the OCO, Thornberry told reporters, reported CQ Roll Call. The committee plans to exercise the same level of oversight over the OCO budget as it does over the base budget, he added.Relying on the war account is hardly a perfect solution for funding the military, primarily because it makes it difficult for defense officials to plan more than one year ahead as there is no certainty as to how much OCO funding will be allocated after FY 2016. But with increased pressure from defense hawks to offer the Pentagon budget relief next year, congressional leaders viewed using the war account as an overflow valve for defense spending as the most expedient solution. Dan Cohen AUTHOR Plans to convert a 68-acre portion of the former Naval Air Station Alameda, Calif., into a mixed development with homes, commercial space and parkland moved one step closer to being realized this week after Alameda’s Planning Board unanimously approved the proposal. The city council will take up the plan next month, when it also will consider the development agreement the city has struck with Alameda Point Partners for the parcel, reported the Alamedan. The city selected Alameda Point Partners after deciding to direct the project itself following two failed efforts led by master developers over the past decade.“We took the different approach,” said Jennifer Ott, the city’s chief operating officer for Alameda Point. “Because of that, we were able to streamline the public, community process,” Ott told the San Francisco Business Times. The developer’s plan calls for 800 townhomes and condominiums, a quarter of which will be affordable to lower income residents; 600,000 square feet of retail and commercial space, including a 125-room hotel; 15 acres of parks and open space; and a new ferry terminal in Seaplane Lagoon.Community advocates, business leaders and other members of the public who spoke at Monday’s board meeting overwhelmingly supported the project, saying it would provide much-needed housing and infrastructure to support economic development.Residents and elected officials have expressed concerns about increased traffic generated by the development in the past — a particular concern due to the Alameda’s island geography — but City Planner Andrew Thomas said officials would strive to reduce traffic impacts by requiring the developer to offer transit options and a high proportion of rental housing that attracts people who are less likely to drive.
