Supermarket retailer Asda has proposed a new contract for its hourly-paid retail employees in England, Scotland and Wales, offering to increase pay to £9 an hour but cut paid breaks.Asda has proposed the new employment contract in order to provide a standardised offering across all its retail employees in the UK, streamlining the organisation’s six existing contract types down to one.The proposal would increase the basic rate of pay to £9 an hour, with the potential for additional geographical and role premiums. Asda last improved its basic pay rate in 2017 to £8.50 an hour. The new contract asks employees to agree to work more flexibly, for example working different times or across different store departments. Asda states that at least three weeks’ notice would be given for rota changes, and consideration would be given to staff with additional commitments outside of work. The organisation will also move towards making all breaks unpaid. The proposed contract further details a change in the night shift window and an increase to the night shift premium. It also requires employees to work bank holidays unless they are booked as annual leave, excepting Christmas Day, Boxing Day and New Year’s Day, which will remain voluntary and paid at double time. The contract confirms that employees will receive 28 days of annual leave in total, including bank holidays.Asda’s non-pay benefits, such as the employee discount, workplace pension, sharesave scheme and bonus plan, will remain unchanged.Anthony Hemmerdinger, senior vice president, operations, said: “Our [employees] do an amazing job every day and we want to continue to reward them with a higher rate of pay, plus benefits such as their annual bonus.“As our customers continue to change the way they shop with us, we also have to be prepared to change to meet their needs and a key part of delivering great service is having the right [employees] in the right place at the right time, which is what this contract aims to achieve.“This proposal is also about increasing our basic rate of pay and aligning the way of working in our stores so that everyone has the same contract, making it fairer to all [employees] and ensuring we can consistently provide the best service to customers.”Asda has entered into a collective consultation process with employees on the proposed contract changes. If successful, Asda expects the contract to take effect from late 2019.Asda predicts that around 5% of its retail staff will be at a financial disadvantage as a result of the new contract implementation. It plans to provide them with a transition payment, which is to be agreed during the consultation process. The contact is already available on a voluntary basis, currently applied to 50,000 staff.Gary Carter, national officer at trade union GMB, added: “Absolutely nothing has been agreed with GMB and we will fight any imposition of these contracts on our members. Since Asda introduced its flexible contract two years ago, nearly 60% of employees have opted not to go on the new contract.“These contract changes will affect nearly 60,000 members of staff; they cannot just be imposed from the top. We expect Asda to negotiate. If [it wants] to roll out the new contract, [it] must listen to employees and sit down with GMB to discuss beneficial improvements to terms and conditions which have the support of the workforce.”
In October 2016, the Professional Teaching Practices Commission proposed twelve changes to the Code of Ethics of the Education Profession. Facebook0TwitterEmailPrintFriendly分享The Alaska Professional Teaching Practices Commision has added flirting, sexting, and inappropriate touching to the list of things that teachers are not allowed to do with students. The first changed went into effect back in September, including broadening what constitutes ‘sexual misconduct’ and expanding anti-discrimination policy to protect a student’s gender identity. Additional changes are still under review according to the Commision, including a proposal that would not allow for a teacher to get romantically involved with a student for one year after their graduation. Jim Seitz, executive director of the Professional Teaching Practices Commission, says “the state’s code of ethics had not been updated since 2005.” Story as aired: Audio PlayerJennifer-on-school-code-of-ethics-changed.mp3VmJennifer-on-school-code-of-ethics-changed.mp300:00RPd The Commission made further revisions during their January 2017 meeting and then voted to accept all twelve proposals. The next commission meeting is set for January 29-31, 2018. The Professional Teaching Practices Commission is composed of five teachers, one superintendent, one principal, one representative of the Department of Education & Early Development, and one representative of higher education.
Photo: NOAAThe U.S. House this evening began debate on a bill by Alaska Congressman Don Young to renew the Magnuson-Stevens Act, the nation’s primary fishing law. Actually, lawmakers just debated how they’re going to debate the legislation. Meanwhile, the White House has issued a policy statement criticizing Young’s bill, suggesting the president would veto it.The White House, like environmental groups and some small-boat fishermen, disapproves of the flexibility written into Young’s bill. It would give regional management councils more leeway to set catch limits and rebuild stocks. The White House says Young’s flexible approach would put fish stocks at risk. Young spokesman Matthew Shuckerow says the Congressman is still listening to stakeholders and he says the bill is likely to change in the legislative process ahead.Download Audio:“We believe, and Congressman Young believes, it’s entirely premature for the president to discuss vetoing the legislation at this time,” Shuckerow said.Young says some regions of the country don’t have enough fish data to employ the rigid science-based model that’s been so successful in the North Pacific. Critics, though, say if catch limits aren’t tied to science, councils will be pressured to let fishermen take too much, depleting the resource. That very debate played out on the other side of the Capitol today, in a Senate subcommittee hearing on fisheries data. Sen. Kelly Ayotte , R-N.H., made a passionate plea for the cod fishermen of New England. Their catch limit, the senator says, was slashed 75 percent in a single year.“And then when I look back over the course of five years, the total cut is 95 percent. I do not know a business that could take a 95 percent cut and continue to operate,” she said.Kathryn Sullivan, the head of NOAA (and, incidentally, the first American woman to walk in space) told Ayotte she does care about fishermen, but she says the cod of New England are in dire trouble, in danger of never recovering.“We’re obliged by law to set catch limits that ensure we do not have over fishing occurring on a stock, and with a stock that’s at 3 percent of its biomass. That is a disasterously low number,” she said.Ayotte says that’s not her only duty: “You’re also obliged by law to think about the economic impact.”Ayotte says the fishermen have no confidence in NOAA’s grim stock assessment because it doesn’t match what they’re seeing on the water. The NOAA Administrator told her there’s a place for fishermen’s observations, but it’s not always the most accurate picture.“Cod are known to school in very large aggregations and when they aggregate that way it becomes easier to catch the fish and that can give … sometimes a false impression,” she said.A Senate bill to renew the Magnuson Stevens Act hasn’t emerged yet. The full House is likely to begin debate on Young’s version of the bill in early June, after the Memorial Day recess.
Airbus Helicopters said it is in consultations with Indian conglomerates – Tatas, Mahindra and Mahindra and Reliance Industries, to jointly manufacture military helicopters. Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s “Make in India” initiative envisages foreign arms makers to form partnership with Indian companies to enable local manufacturing of arms, to reduce imports. In 2014, India decided to scrap the earlier proposal to acquire 197 light utility helicopters in order to allow local companies to join international majors and build the helicopters within India through joint ventures.Russian helicopter manufacturers and US-based Sikorsky are also expected to bid for the order.Currently, state-run Hindustan Aeronautics, based in Bangalore is the only Indian producer of helicopters, meaning global defence firms will have to find partners with Indian conglomerates who have ventured into the arena, with the opening of the sector a little more than a decade ago. However, Farid, who was speaking on the sidelines of the ongoing Aero India 2015, noted that the task of establishing necessary vendor units in India was going to be tough, given that such vendors don’t exist as of now.The Narendra Modi government has increased foreign direct investment in the defence sector up to 49%, in the belief that more international firms would be willing to tie up and start producing locally. On Wednesday, India’s Bharat Forge announced its joint venture with Israel’s Rafael Advanced Defence Systems to produce the Spike anti-tank guided missile.

The main causes of homophobia include religious beliefs, manhood prejudices, or misogyny according to The Journal of Sexual Medicine. Homophobia is one the main causes of harassment with consequences as suicide or other hate crimes. (Palacios) Recently, in Esaczú district, a woman of 28 years old was killed and dismembered. The murder is considered by her family and social media members as a hate crime for her sexual preference. Violence rates increase when hate discourses are supported publicly. The ex-candidate in the last elections affirms that he does not intend to discriminate people with sexual diverse preferences. However, his electoral projects and speeches disagreed with equality principles in the human rights movement. The spoken word is meaningful and powerful. Words must be chosen carefully in every situation because they produce an effect on the listener. During the last elections, Facebook was a hate tramp where comments revealed a wave of hate and disconformity. Later on, newspapers claimed that “hate was the winner in the first round”. Violence rates increased during the first months of the year. The year 2018 is coming to an end after visible hate signs towards the sex diverse community. During the periodical elections that occurred at the beginning of the year, division of political parties included religious influences against the LGTBI community. The Tico Times published seven months ago an article by Lindsey Fendt about the controversy regarding gender identity in Costa Rica. Citizens should concern on the harmony of the people of their nation instead of their differences. However, opinion differences have led to violence and even murder in the “peace paradise” known as Costa Rica. The Front for Equal Rights (FDI) reported that in February occurred eighteen verbal aggressions, seven physical aggressions, and four attempts of physical damage in public places including a bar, a bus, and the street. (Ugarte). According to a study by CIPAC, affective relationships between people of the same sex have a negative connotation in an important group of society and public institutions. For instance, in 2014 Caja Costarricense de Seguro Social approved health insurance for homosexual couples. Consequently, groups of citizens disagreed and expressed disconformity. Moreover, homosexuality is considered a psychosocial disease by the groups against it. However, in 1973, the American Psychiatric Association decided that homosexuality is not a mental disease. Animal shelters and other institutions that help and care about animals need support and to be taken into account by the government, so they can work together for the same objective, which is saving the animals’ lives and habitats.Costa Rica has been known worldwide for its sustainability and conservation efforts; the government and citizens must start taking action to solve this issue. Some Costa Ricans think that they cannot do much to help, but they can help by volunteering to inform others and carrying out awareness campaigns around the country. They can spread any kind of information related to animals’ death to make emphasis to this problem and make it a national concern. The government is not the only that should take care of this problem, most Costa Ricans should pay attention to this issue and start doing something about it. The Tico Times should also contribute to solve this problem by generating news informing people about what they can do to prevent more animals’ deaths, and explaining the most common human factors that affect the animals’ habitats. At least some Costa Ricans would know what to do to cooperate and help animals with this type of information. The government should build wildlife overpasses to reduce the impact of highways on flora and fauna since Costa Rica does not have a legal framework that takes action on building animal paths. These wildlife overpasses are among the most effective structures for allowing wildlife of many types to move relatively unimpeded across roads. They have been successfully employed in Europe and North America, and Costa Rica needs to follow that same structure to prevent more animal deaths.Climate change is another concern that not only affects humans but also animals. Jaguars and other species need to migrate due to climate change and some of them die while trying to migrate to another place or looking for a mate. People must understand that climate change is a reality, and that affects flora and fauna more than people thought. It is time to start taking action on this problem and care more about wildlife. Our society need to be aware of this situation and solve it as soon as possible to give animals the opportunity to migrate without risking their lives in the process and only for natural reasons.Roger Waters and Carlos Alvarado are friends By Wendy Brown Costa Ricans need to open the perspective to a future where society has to be united. The past elections were a clear example that hate does not lead anywhere. Costa Rica is a rich country in multiple ways. Citizens have the responsibility to take care of their nation and to maintain harmony. The more a country works united for the benefit of the majority, the more the country grows. The strength of each community member is the power to work with others to make a change. Since centuries ago, humans have fight because of their differences. The time to harmonize and unite our capacities will make change. Work CitedGallegos, J. (16, September, 2018). “Fabricio Alvarado: Yo tengo amigos y familia homosexual y los aprecio.” El Mundo.cr. The production was phenomenal. Since the show, I have not stopped listening to old Pink Floyd classics at home and in the car. My children insist on Shawn Mendes, I remain Comfortably Numb to their wishes. That evening, prior to the show, President Carlos Alvarado tweeted a photo of the vintage Pink Floyd t-shirt he would be wearing. After an incredible performance that received rave reviews on social media, Carlos kept tweeting. One charming video featured the president presenting the idol with a photo of a wall being torn down when Costa Rica abolished its military in 1948. Mr Waters was very pleased.Mr. Waters was also overly eager to praise the local administration. Though he spent his entire career railing against governments & corruption, he seems to believe that Costa Rica is some utopia where corruption and government misdeeds don’t occur.During the classic hit “Mother” Roger held up a sign that said, “In Costa Rica, Why not?” in response to the song’s lyric, “Mother can I trust the government?”At which point I wanted to scream, “CEMENTAZO!” It seems Mr. Waters is selectively informed of our political reality. Although Mr. Alvarado may be a new star, the “government” infers a cumbersome machine with tentacles stretching long beyond the face & tenure of our young presidente. In retrospect & after watching all of the chumminess occurring between these two men. Most ironic was the use of private school children to sing “Another Brick in the Wall.” Yes, I am aware that Mr. Waters does this at every venue he plays. However, in Costa Rica, at that very moment, it was a bit of a burn. As they sang, the children of Costa Rica attending public school had been DENIED their education for nearly 3 months. And NO ONE in the government has been willing to find a solution.Mr. Alvarado has every right to meet with Mr. Waters and share pictures of crumbling walls. But it probably is not wise to boast about it on social media when most of the country has severely suffered from the on-going teachers’ strike crisis.Come to think of it, perhaps it is the perfect union. After all, “We don’t need no education” could well be the line that sums up 2018 for the administration of Carlos Alvarado. TEMPE, Ariz. — You did not have to be a coach, player or scout to see that John Brown was not himself in 2016.The speedy receiver who a season prior reached the 1,000-yard mark played in 15 games, but caught just 39 passes for 517 yards and two touchdowns, all of which were career lows.Given what he was dealing with, it is tough to blame him.Brown had been hampered by hamstring issues, which then led to a blood test that revealed he carried the sickle-cell trait. After finally getting that under control yet with him still not feeling great, a cyst was discovered on the receiver’s spine. “It was real hard because I just wasn’t the same towards people,” he said. “Kind of being dry and you know, it wasn’t just the cyst — I was done with everything. I couldn’t eat, I couldn’t lift.”Nowadays he feels “great all around,” with no fatigue or weakness and has declared himself back to normal.Brown did not have to say it, though.“He doesn’t look like he looked like last year,” Palmer said. “He just has a different energy about him, he’s heavier, he’s stronger. He looks more explosive than he did last year.”Palmer added it appears Brown is enjoying football again, which was understandably not the case last season.“I’m looking forward to having him back healthy and the way he is right now, because he’s a special player for us,” the QB said. “Dealing with all the things he did last year was tough emotionally — obviously physically — but he just seems emotionally in a better place.”Brown said he started feeling normal within a day of having the cyst removed, and he realized he was past the ailments when a couple weeks later he was able to run around with his daughter, which is something he had struggled to do. He was even able to take her to Disneyland, which required plenty of walking around.“I walked around for four hours without complaining, so that’s when I really knew I was back to normal,” he said.It was like a real-life fairy tale. The key now is for Brown to stay healthy, which he said comes down to taking care of his body more and praying the cyst does not return.“I couldn’t get it going,” he said of last year. “I’m just thankful. God put me in the right situation at the right time with the right people, the coaches and the trainers, they were on it heavy and they found out the situation and once the cyst got removed, I was back to normal like in 24 hours.”Follow Adam Green on Twitter – / 20 The 5: Takeaways from the Coyotes’ introduction of Alex Meruelo Former Cardinals kicker Phil Dawson retires 0 Comments Share Derrick Hall satisfied with D-backs’ buying and selling Receiver John Brown fields a punt during an OTA practice Tuesday, May 16. (Photo by Adam Green/Arizona Sports) It has since been removed and, just like that, he was back.“Smoke looks like John Brown,” Cardinals coach Bruce Arians said Tuesday following the team’s first organized team activity practice. “A couple of those routes he ran, he did not run one route like that last year.“Just, he couldn’t. The smile on his face and him laughing — just knock on wood it stays that way.”Arians knocked his fist on the podium a couple of times in hopes Brown’s good fortune will continue. The better Brown is, the better Arizona’s offense will be.A third-round pick in 2014 out of Pittsburg State, Brown quickly emerged as a key target for QB Carson Palmer, one who could take the top off a defense as well as make big plays underneath. His longest reception in 2016 was for just 30 yards, and he eclipsed the 100-yard receiving mark just once, in Week 4.“I feel better than before,” Brown said Tuesday. “I’m just ready to work and continue to prove myself.”There also seemed to be a sense of relief for Brown, who felt like he hurt the team last season. Even though the circumstances were beyond his control, not being the type of player — or person — he strives to be wore on him. Top Stories Grace expects Greinke trade to have emotional impact

By Evie AndreouWEAKNESSES and gaps in some procedures were observed by experts assessing the first drill to handle patients suspected to be infected with the deadly Ebola virus, Health Minister Philippos Patsalis said yesterday.Participating in the drill that aimed to evaluate the level of readiness of the health ministry and their cooperation with other services, were staff from Larnaca airport, the ambulance service, and the Nicosia and Larnaca General hospitals. The first scenario dealt with a suspected Ebola case at Larnaca airport and the second with a supposed student from a high-risk country that had the symptoms of the virus and visited the emergency unit of the Nicosia hospital to seek help.Commenting on the gaps, Patsalis, who oversaw the exercise, said that this is the reason why drills take place, to identify the important details and gaps that could lead to staff infections. He added that the corrective measures will be taken once experts evaluated the procedures.“It is important to cover those gaps, so that the suspected case is contained in such a way that it does not cause an epidemic,” he said.During the drill, participants and others present were shown the especially modulated rooms that have been prepared to accept suspected Ebola patients, as well as the protection suits to be worn by the healthcare staff.Constant changes in instructions issued by international health organisations lead to the continued changing of the protection uniforms, the minister said.He added that so far, different types of uniforms have been supplied and that the ministry always tries to abideby the new instructions, while placing orders for the new uniforms. He said there was no reason for concern as the ministry is taking all possible measures to handle an Ebola case as per the suggestions of the World Health Organisation and others.Patsalis also said that in the morning he was informed through the bi-communal health technical committee that the results were out for the five out of the ten suspected Middle East Respiratory Syndrome (MERS) patients in the north and that they are normal.“This is reassuring, but we have to say that the health ministry also has an action plan in place for this possible outbreak of a MERS incident in the north,” he said.Later in the afternoon, Turkish Cypriot health authorities announced that the test results showed that the 83-year-old woman who had travelled to Saudi Arabia and had died on Sunday did not suffer from MERS as was initially believed. The ministry also prepared and aims to circulate a poster with instructions for travellers from high risk countries (Sierra Leone, Liberia and Guinea). You May LikeLuxury Crossover SUV I Search AdsThese SUVs Are The Cream Of The Crop. By Angelos AnastasiouRULING DISY has attacked the Cooperative Central Bank’s (CCB) board, hinting at unwise decisions in appointing board members to its 18 branches. In a statement, DISY said it has supported the CCB and continues to do so, particularly during this “critical time,” but keeps a close eye on the CCB board’s decisions and actions.“We would like to clarify that our consent in the House to appoint the CCB’s board does not burden us with responsibility for its decisions with regard to restructuring the organisation,” DISY said.“We hope the decisions made are appropriate and truly contribute to the recovery of the cooperative movement,” it added. “The results, whether positive or negative, will be attributable to the management.”Yesterday, DISY spokesman Prodromos Prodromou offered clarification on the party’s statement, saying that the CCB board must prove its competence in practice.“We decided that these people will take over the CCB during this critical point in time,” he said. “But they are responsible and will be judged. We don’t want people to think that what happens – or doesn’t happen – is the result of a decision by the government or the ruling party.”During the day it became apparent that DISY’s objections related to the appointment of former employees of failed Laiki Bank.Opposition party AKEL’s deputy Yiannos Lamaris said one could not but agree with DISY’s reservations over appointments to the bank.“The situation in the banking sector is extremely fragile, and the need to restore confidence and boost liquidity is paramount,” he said. “Therefore, those deciding the appointments must be 100 times more careful than previously.”“There are concerns regarding employees who left a bank they proved unable to run properly, and have now been tasked with saving Cooperatives,” Lamaris said.“This is not the first contradiction in the government’s policy. It seems that the government’s only concern recently is to infiltrate all institutions by appointing its own people.”The Cooperative banking network was nationalised last year following a €1.5 billion government bailout. In return, the bank was consolidated into 18 branches, from an initial 93, and a voluntary redundancy scheme was successfully implemented under a new administrative structure. You May LikeLivestlyChip And Joanna’s $18M Mansion Is Perfect, But It’s The Backyard Everyone Is Talking AboutLivestlyUndoPopularEverythingColorado Mom Adopted Two Children, Months Later She Learned Who They Really ArePopularEverythingUndoKelley Blue BookYou Won’t Believe How Affordable These Ford Car Models AreKelley Blue BookUndo Pensioner dies after crash on Paphos-Polis roadUndoCruise passenger airlifted to Paphos hospitalUndoRemand for pair in alleged property fraud (Updated)Undoby Taboolaby Taboola
