first_imgAdvertisement He said part of the money would also be used to improve service quality, facilitate trainings and continue the roll out its fibre optic cable across the country.MTN is the largest operator in Nigeria, with 38.7 million subscribers. The company last year added 1,504 2G and 480 3G base stations to its fleet of BTSs, bringing the total BTS to 9,110 at the end of 2010.Goodluck decried the general poor quality of service in the telecoms sector and reiterated that in Nigeria, demand outweighs the supply. He emphasised that quality of service would be a thing of the past if the country’s infrastructure base was effectively managed and improved upon. – Advertisement – He disclosed that all the operators put together, including MTN, Globacom, Airtel, Etisalat and all the Code Division Multiple Access (CDMAs) operators have a total of 15,000 base stations to serve the 89 million subscribers in Nigeria and this is grossly inadequate. He said: “The issue about the persistent drop in quality of service would only be a thing of the past if only we could have serious infrastructure upgrade. I can tell you that all operators, including the CDMAs are only serving the over 83 million active subscribers with just 15,000 base stations. This is compared to the United Kingdom, where the population is just 62 million and they have 66,000 base stations. So you can see now that in Nigeria, demands far outweigh supply. So these are some of the issues.”The firm’s General Manager, Corporate Communications, Funmi Omogbenigun, in her comments said operators were expected to maintain competition because more cables would still come into Nigeria. She added that quality of service was an issue in some areas like Abuja, Imo, Osun etc because operators encounter challenges in getting viable landing in those areas.Meanwhile, the Etisalat package came with an interest rate that was not disclosed as according to the company, “it is a matter of commercial confidentiality”.The signing agreement for the facility was held in Lagos yesterday with Citibank as the financial advisers to the transaction and Banwo & Ighodalo as legal advisers. The banks that participated in the loan syndication are First Bank, Zenith Bank, Access Bank, Fidelity Bank, United Bank for Africa, Bank PHB, Guaranty Trust Bank and Oceanic Bank.Managing Director of Etisalat, Mr. Steve Evans, said the facility was a landmark development in the telecommunications sector for 2011, and would offer the company the opportunity to aggressively intensify Etisalat Nigeria’s network expansion across the country and offer what he called an even better quality service to its over seven million customers, sealing its claim as the most innovative and fastest-growing GSM operator.last_img read more

first_imgMicrosoft Chairman Bill Gates on CBS Advertisement Microsoft Chairman Bill Gates on CBSSoftware giant’s chairman says the company’s history in the cell phone sector was “clearly a mistake” during an interview on CBS.Although Bill Gates stepped away from his day-to-day role at Microsoft nearly five years ago, he still keeps a close eye on the company he co-founded — and he isn’t always happy with what he sees.During a recent interview broadcast this morning on CBS This Morning, the Microsoft chairman was asked by Charlie Rose whether he was happy with Steve Ballmer’s performance as chief executive. Noting that there have been “many amazing things” accomplished under Ballmer’s leadership in the past couple of years, Gates said he was not satisfied with the company’s innovations. – Advertisement – “Well, he and I are two of the most self-critical people — you can imagine,” Gates said during the interview (see video below). “And here were a lot of amazing things that Steve’s leadership got done with the company in the last year. Windows 8 is key to the future, the Surface computer. Bing, people are seeing as a better search product, Xbox.”“But is — is it enough?” he said. “No, he and I are not satisfied that in terms of, you know, breakthrough things, that we’re doing everything possible.”Gates was especially critical of Microsoft’s position in the smartphone sector, where the company currently holds just 2.4 percent of the market, according to recent IDC data.“There’s a lot of things like cell phones where we didn’t get out in the lead very early. … We didn’t miss cell phones, but the way we went about it didn’t allow us to get the leadership. So it’s clearly a mistake.”The primary focus of the interview was the Melinda and Bill Gates Foundation, the philanthropy to which Gates has dedicated most of his attention since stepping away from Microsoft in 2008.Credit: CNETlast_img read more

first_imgAdvertisement An activist group calling themselves Anonymous Africa hacked the African National Congress website on Friday. The attack on the ANC site involved multiple computers overwhelming the site’s server with huge amounts of traffic. This is known as a DoS (Distributed Denial of Service) attack. This came a day after Mugabe used a presidential decree to by-pass Parliament and fast-track amendments to electoral laws. He said he had to do this if he was to comply with a Constitutional Court order to hold elections by end of next month. This unilateral and controversial call for polls at the end of July has created a potential constitutional crisis. – Advertisement – [related-posts]Anonymous Africa, which has a twitter account called “zim4thewin” sent a tweet shortly after the cyber attack saying:http://www.anc.org.za is tango down! for being corrupt and supporting the mass murdering Mugabe. #anc #africa #zimbabwe #anonymous. The activist group accuses President Jacob Zuma’s party of being Mugabe’s enabler. Zuma is the facilitator to the SADC mediated Zimbabwe coalition government between ZANU PF and the MDC formations. The development comes as SADC heads of state prepare to hold an extraordinary summit of Zimbabwe in the Mozambican capital Maputo on Saturday.Africa Anonymous has in the past week also attacked several ZANU PF related sites, including the state controlled Herald newspaper and the Ministry of Defence website in Zimbabwe. They also hacked South African news portal IOL, which had written an opinion piece last Sunday which the activists said “glorified” 89 year old Mugabe. Many people took to twitter to react to what some described as a new form of cyber activism or ‘Internet Street Protest’. One of the tweets read: ‘I hear Herald has been subjected to a DOS attack. Good Job’ and another said: ‘Just want to be a fly on the wall of the ANC boardroom when the @zim4thewin conversation goes down. Imagine’.However other observers were not so impressed: “If they were doing this to get some information would be helpful, but not just to bring down a website.”A DoS attack has frequently been used to obtain sensitive information and e-mail files on a server while it is rebooting. It is not clear if these attacks gained any such information or if they were designed purely to annoy and protest.Credit: www.swradioafrica.comlast_img read more

Together, that means the pair combined for a total of 96.3% of the total market. – Advertisement – This essentially dominates the competing platforms of BlackBerry, Windows Phone and others.iOS climbed just over two percent in the latest results, and the report indicates that Apple shipped 192.7 million iPhones during the year. The report suggests that this was based on the strength of the iPhone 6 and iPhone 6 Plus sales.Vying for third place is still a powerful battle between the likes of BlackBerry, Windows Phone and others.Via iPhone Hackslast_img read more

Image Credit: BBC Advertisement One of the world’s largest cyber-currency exchanges is under investigation after it acknowledged that one of its employee’s PCs had been hacked.South Korea-based Bithumb has said that it believes personal details of more than 30,000 of its customers were stolen as a result. It appears the data was subsequently used to fool users into letting thieves steal funds from their accounts. – Advertisement – Bithumb has promised compensation. But the Korea Internet and Security Agency, a local government-empowered watchdog, has launched an inquiry into the matter, according to the Yonhap news agency.Scam calls Bithumb allows its members to buy and sell the virtual currencies Bitcoin and Ethereum. It is South Korea’s biggest cryptocurrency exchange, based on recent trading volumes, and one of the five largest in the world. The breach is reported to have occurred in February, and is said to have involved an employee’s home PC rather than computer servers at the firm’s headquarters.Bithumb is reported to have discovered the breach only on 29 June and reported it to the authorities the next day.Although a notice posted to the company’s site said the leaked data did not contain passwords, dozens of customers have reported receiving follow-up scam calls and texts in June that persuaded them to share their accounts’ authentication codes.[related-posts]Bithumb has promised initially to cover losses of up to 100,000 won ($86; £67) per customer, and to add to this once it has been able to verify individual losses. But it is unclear whether victims will be compensated in full.An unverified local report said one member claimed to have lost 1.2bn won ($1.04m; £806,000).At present, virtual currencies are not regulated by South Korea’s financial authorities and efforts to address the matter have made little progress.source: BBC Africa Newslast_img read more
