A city panel voiced concerns Monday that the LAPD – even with its ambitious hiring plan – might be unable to recruit enough officers to staff a proposed station in the west San Fernando Valley. Members of the City Council’s Public Safety Committee said they wanted more information from the Los Angeles Police Department on budgeting and hiring goals for the station planned for Canoga Avenue and Schoenborn Street. Council members questioned whether the city should delay the station’s scheduled 2008 opening to ensure there are adequate numbers of command staff and rank-and-file officers. “It’s going to be a real stretch when this station comes on line … to make sure we have enough people in place,” said Councilman Bernard Parks, a former LAPD chief and frequent critic of the department.
