first_imgPBS recently aired a new mini-series, American Epic, a three-part documentary, with Jack White, T Bone Burnett, and Robert Redford as executive producers. American Epic explores early recording technology from the 1920’s and how it captured the sounds of some of the first musicians formative to the genres of blues, country, gospel, Hawaiian, Cajun, and folk music. The series can be seen here.For the occasion, Nas revisited “One Mic,” from his 2001 Stillmatic album, with Jack White on piano. Because of the nature of the special in using instruments from the 1920’s, the rapper utilized one single microphone along with a “recording device timed by a weight-driven system of clockwork gears” that presses the recording to vinyl as soon as the session is over. Watch the stunning rendition below:The series will also feature a full-length movie called The American Epic Sessions, during which various musicians come together to record on the primitive recording technology of the 1920’s. first_imgThe chief executive of Iceland’s Pension Fund for State Employees (LSR) is to step down later this year after 37 years at the fund.LSR said Haukur Hafsteinsson announced his decision to resign at a staff meeting on Friday, but had previously told the fund’s board of directors that he intended to go.Hafsteinsson said: “I will be 65 in the autumn of this year and think that now is the right time for a change.”Unnur Petursdottir, chair of the ISK826bn (€6bn) fund’s board, said Hafsteinsson’s decision had come as a surprise. Haukur HafsteinssonShe said he was one of the most experienced leaders in the pension system in Iceland and had wealth of information about government pensions in particular.He was leaving a gap that would not be easy to fill, she said.Hafsteinsson has worked with the pension fund since graduating from the University of Iceland in 1982.
