Broward County schools, for now, have approval to keep classrooms closed and to not offer an “in-person” learning option to the working parents of school-aged students. The Florida Department of Education yesterday approved the district’s plan to go online-only when the fall semester starts on August 19th. Meanwhile, the Florida Education Association made it crystal clear last month when it filed a civil suit that it does not want students and teachers back in classrooms until the state makes major gains in the fight against COVID-19. A hearing regarding the lawsuit filed by the Florida Education Association continues today after the Governor’s team filed a motion yesterday to dismiss the whole thing. The union represents 145,000 Florida educators. The lawsuit calls on a judge to return control back to local school districts that would let them decide when schools can reopen for in-person instruction.
